Full Professor at the Instituto Superior de Agronomia (University of Lisbon) and a member of the Forest Research Center, where she coordinates the ForChange research line on forest ecosystem management under global change.
Her research focuses on natural resource inventories, forest growth modeling, forest management, and the assessment of non-wood forest products and ecosystem services. She has participated in numerous national and international projects and authored over 300 publications, about 40% in international peer-reviewed journals.
She has been co-editor of the Springer series Managing Forest Ecosystems since 2001 and served as editor of Forest Ecology and Management (2019–2022). Currently, she is Vice-Chair of the European Forest Institute Board and Vice-President of the IUFRO task force Sustainable Planted Forests for a Greener Future.
