BSc and MSc programmes at the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium) in 1996-2000 provided him with theoretically-based educational qualifications in biology (specialization: ecology and biogeography). In 2006, he successfully defended his PhD thesis in science at the Université catholique de Louvain where he followed a theoretical and applied research and training programme providing him with strong competences in landscape ecology, numerical ecology, spatial analyses and predictive modelling approaches.

In 2007, he was awarded a highly competitive fellowship obtained from the Belgian Fund for Scientific Research to conduct post-doctoral research in collaboration with scientific institutions in Finland and Switzerland. In 2008, he was hired for a permanent position as a project leader at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology to establish and coordinate the national biodiversity-monitoring programme in Luxembourg. Since 2014, he is working at the Biodiversity and Landscape Ecology lab of the Forest Sciences Centre of Catalonia (Spain) where he has been involved several international projects and initiatives. As a representative of the European Bird Census Council (EBCC), he is now coordinating a LIFE project funded by the European Commission to develop the EuroBirdPortal (http://www.eurobirdportal.org/ebp/en/).
