BSc and MSc programmes at the Université catholique de Louvain (Belgium) in 1996-2000 provided him with theoretically-based educational qualifications in biology (specialization: ecology and biogeography). In 2006, he successfully defended his PhD thesis in science at the Université catholique de Louvain where he followed a theoretical and applied research and training programme providing him with strong competences in landscape ecology, numerical ecology, spatial analyses and predictive modelling approaches.


In 2007, he was awarded a highly competitive fellowship obtained from the Fund for Scientific Research F.R.S.-FNRS (Belgium) to conduct post-doctoral research in collaboration with scientific institutions in several European countries. In 2008, he was hired for a permanent position as a project manager at the Centre de Recherche Public – Gabriel Lippmann to develop and coordinate the national biodiversity-monitoring programme in Luxembourg. In 2014, he moved to the Biodiversity and Landscape Ecology lab of the Forest Sciences Centre of Catalonia (Spain). As a representative of the European Bird Census Council (EBCC), he participated in several international projects and initiatives and he coordinated a LIFE project funded by the European Commission to develop the EuroBirdPortal . In 2017, he became a scientific assistant at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) to provide scientific expertise and coordinating support for the production of the Global Assessment report from the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES). In 2020, he got a permanent position as head of the Observatory for Climate, Environment and Biodiversity at the Environmental Research and Innovation department of the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology. He is leading and managing a multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers delivering state-of-the-art and science-based infrastructures and data for ecological and environmental monitoring.
